80 years of morse code!

an old guy with 80 years of morse code experience beat a kid using txt slang, don’t know if they were using predictive input. and who won also was determined by receiving on the other end, which is something the txter can’t really control (versus telegraph machine). but still. though i wonder how the person who won the LAST speed txt contest would’ve fared.

Wikitosh! By Mac Users, For Mac Users

i’m no fanboy, but as someone still relatively new to the world o’ mac, i think this could be a useful resource.

here’s to hoping it’s nothing serious

while numerous news sites and blogs have reported the delay of the 3rd season of chappelle show, according to variety: “Variety’s article (registration req’d) said Chappelle had to “seek treatment for unspecified personal issues.”"

meanwhile a blog, loosie, has a “report” on strange behavior by chappelle.

CNN.com - FBI: Male enhancement drugs illegally provided to mob - May 5, 2005

the question now becomes did the mafia have some sort of underground erectile dysfunction ring where they had mass distribution of these drugs illegally? OR did the mob face their own ED problems and you know, needed to self-medicate? hahaha. i’m sure if more than 3 people read my blog, the mob would be after me for questioning its collective manhood. haha.

CNN.com - Fight over finger found in custard - May 6, 2005

i understand completely that this was going to be a lawsuit at some point. i understand that the finger is a huge piece of evidence. i think this guy will make off like a bandit because he almost ate a finger. but come on! the guy who lost it is 23! and now he’s stubby fingered! he’s going to have to polish up his game because it’s certainly going to be harder for him to get dates sans a finger tip. but come on, it’s not like it wasn’t documented what happened. you had doc’s report, etc. give the kid his finger back!

i hope the fingerless kid sues the guy who almost ate it. (and despite what will be my considerable future, i’m very much against frivolous lawsuits, which i’m convinced so many are. yes, people need a place to air grievances, but abuse of the legal system goes on way too much. sorry you feel bad about something minor that happened to you, not really grounds to sue. and no in this case i don’t think this is totally frivolous, but that might change once things are filed. if the complaint that’s sure to comes alleges things like so emotionally distraught he cannot eat frozen custard, his favorite dessert, then it’ll border frivolous to me)

the new SAT and i’m old

The New York Times > Education > On Education: SAT Essay Test Rewards Length and Ignores Errors

lot of MIT centric news this morning. but let’s start in order of my observations. (and this is not a “X things i think i think” list, though it is a list. and i need to start making thoses lists again.)
1. having the SAT change from 1600 to 2400 makes me feel really old. it’s worse than for those people who’s score “changed” when they rescaled the scoring a few years back. and the change in grade for the SAT makes me feel older than the change in format/grade of the GRE. when the change the LSAT (which you know will eventually happen) i think i’ll feel like 80.
2. based on everything i’ve read about it, the writing section of the SAT is the easiest to coach and the section apparently a lot of people are relying on to boost their scores.
3. apparently, according to this article, what you write isn’t as important as how much you write.
4. and with all the statitisical analysis tools i’m sure are available to him, i’m glad the MIT guy cracked this in his hotel room, with EXCEL… hahaha

Filibuster at Princeton Sends Frist a Message - New York Times

okay, admittedly i’m getting lazy with the “headlines” of my posts. at any rate, do i think filibusters are good? not really. do i think they should be eliminated? no. do i think judicial confirmations should be rigorously challenged? very much so.

at any rate, good for these princeton kids. whether or not they agree with filibusters, it’s important that at least they are doing something about something they think is important and actually might have some impact. you know, unlike perhaps a time travel convention (if some “future guy” shows up with the cure to terrible diseases, i will eat my words and apologize).

Time Travelers to Meet in Not Too Distant Future - New York Times

yeah, umm, the brainaics over at MIT organized a time travelers convention. umm, these smart kids have way too much time on their hands. for some reason, despite the mention of human-sized hamster wheels, color-light dance floors in dorm rooms, pizza buttons, i still have an image of these kids that is closer to short sleeve button up shirts buttoned all the way up versus a “real genius” type atmosphere….

CNN.com - Pope’s old car brings $245,000 - May 5, 2005

austinite? is that right? at any rate, someone in austin won the pope’s old car. that’s right, someone in austin won an auction for a 1999 VW golf. a 99 golf. winning bid $245,000…. say it with me people: RIDICULOUS!

HoustonChronicle.com - Houstonians give $10 million for tsunami relief

The local fund’s $10 million will be targeted at specific redevelopment projects in four countries — Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives — that were particularly hard hit by the tsunami….
$5 million: Will be used to provide scholarships for as many as 75 students to attend Texas A&M University or the University of Arkansas for study in subjects that will aid ongoing reconstruction — engineering, city planning and agriculture.

you know what, that’s complete BS. half of the money raised going to scholarships instead of ACTUAL tsunami relief?! those scholarship kids should (a) lose their scholarship if they change majors or whatever; (b) be required to do some sort of intern/volunteer work for someone actually involved with tsunami relief now; and (c) be required to do some actual work post-graduation on tsunami reconstruction, etc.

half of the money raised here in houston and it’s going not to actual tsunami relief. i can’t believe there’s not a bigger outcry about this. hell, i don’t think there’s an outcry at all about it.
