HoustonChronicle.com - Houstonians give $10 million for tsunami relief

The local fund’s $10 million will be targeted at specific redevelopment projects in four countries — Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Maldives — that were particularly hard hit by the tsunami….
$5 million: Will be used to provide scholarships for as many as 75 students to attend Texas A&M University or the University of Arkansas for study in subjects that will aid ongoing reconstruction — engineering, city planning and agriculture.

you know what, that’s complete BS. half of the money raised going to scholarships instead of ACTUAL tsunami relief?! those scholarship kids should (a) lose their scholarship if they change majors or whatever; (b) be required to do some sort of intern/volunteer work for someone actually involved with tsunami relief now; and (c) be required to do some actual work post-graduation on tsunami reconstruction, etc.

half of the money raised here in houston and it’s going not to actual tsunami relief. i can’t believe there’s not a bigger outcry about this. hell, i don’t think there’s an outcry at all about it.
