labor talks

so the nfl is the latest of the sports to look at the CBA to get ready. hopefully it won’t press on like the nhl and seemingly the nba did/are doing but it’s intriguing:

The most mind-boggling notion: If no new deal is struck, every NFL player could be a free agent in 2007. With no salary cap in place

from espn.com page 2 daily daily quicky

it’d be like a free-for-all. real life fantasy football, only not everyone is equal because not everyone has the same amount of money. would owners really open up and pay ridiculous amounts to get the players they want (as much as these owners love sports, they also love their money)? would players go to the money or go to the championship (team where better players are signing and take less money to go along for the ride)? would small market teams be able to compete (the lure of playing at lambeau)? this would be beyond entertaining to watch. i think owners need to clamp down anyways. the days of overspending are, and need to be over. thank god it happened in the nba already. like all those players who got them deserved max out contracts. no way in hell. but the nfl, what i don’t like most (and i’m sure it’s the same in every sport to some degree) is the auto pay bump. does this year’s number 1 overall draft pick REALLY need to make a contract bigger than last year’s number 1 overall pick? no, that kind of thinking is ludicrous and leads to rising prices for NO reason. and while i’m at it, all contracts should be for yearly equal money. you want a $100 mil contract for 10 years. $10 mil a year. too bad that’s 20% of your cap. at the end of the day, it’s not just players, but also owners who are causing this crazy inflation of cost. and it’s unstoppable until someone takes a stand. that someone will probably lose a lot in doing so, but it’ necessary.

caffeine creates restlessness, hyperactivity, and inattention? really?

APA: First Graders’ Behavior Problems Linked to Caffeinated Cola - CME Teaching Brief - MedPage Today

hmm, other than the inattention is any of this really a surprise? and isn’t the inattention really a function of being on a caffeine buzz and being young? don’t other studies say that a bit of caffeine prior to an exam (of adults) help them remember things better and focus? so once you don’t use restless energy on anything and can learn to focus it, some caffeine can be beneficial.

besides, i drank tons of soda when i was a kid. granted probably not at school. i also watched a lot of tv. i came out okay. though i do think tv now is different than when i was a kid, so now i think tv has a huge role in add/adhd type behavior for kids. but whatever it’s like obesity. hey i know that there are genetic factors. i know some people are predisposed to addictive behaviors and weight gain. but i also think that CANNOT account for the sheer increase in obesity over the past few decades. yeah mcdonald’s is bad for you. don’t eat it every day. there is a basic lack of self control in this country, along with a lack of accountability. mcdonald’s is accountable, but so is the person who eats mcdonalds that much. i’m off topic now. so this ends. caffeine for kids! i’m ambivalent toward it.

be cool - elmore leonard

Elliot Wilhelm (The Rock), the hulking Samoan bodyguard to Raji who wants to break into show business as either an actor or country singer. Oh, and he’s gay, too.

Detroiters get a bonus laugh because the real Wilhelm - the director of the Detroit Film Theater program - is the exact opposite of this. The character was named after him because the Detroit-based Leonard offered a “be a character name in my next book” item in a charity auction and Wilhelm won the honor

hahah, man that must suck. you enter a contest to get your name in an elmore leonard novel. you win. you think you’re going to be some cool EL crime thug, but he makes you a gay bodyguard.

desks

New Weight-Loss Focus: The Lean and the Restless - New York Times

In his office he has a treadmill in place of a desk. He got it last year when he saw the data from the study comparing lean people and obese ones.

“My computer is stationed over the treadmill,” he said. “I work at 0.7 miles an hour.”

this is cool. i made the decision two years ago, that when i’m privileged enough to have my own office AND get to select my own furniture in said office, that i would get a standing desk. i’ll have a barstool height chair there in case too. i’d probably have a smaller table, maybe a couch (depending on office size), for meetings (don’t want to be standing over people in meetings, well most meetings). but this is a great idea too. i think maybe a standing desk and a treadmill desk.

regardless i think it’s good to move while you work. when i’m studying i tend to walk around with my notes while i study, it makes studying seem more active and i don’t get burned out quite so easily as when i’m just sitting at a desk staring at pages for hours.

sarcasm found

well at least the part of the brain that helps people recognize it. i mean the part of the brain that makes it, isn’t that just like insecurity and all that. not say that i’m insecure, umm, yeah. haha. if i were around people who didn’t recognize sarcasm, i’d be in a lot of trouble (and i have been, those people are no fun).

Peerflix: No DVD Rentals! Trade Your DVDs

hmm, i’m not a netflix user, but i would be in another life. but this sounds interesting as an alternative to netflix. especially since netflix is like what, $13/month. 13 trades in peerflix would be a lot of movies. granted i suppose with netflix in that month the only limit is how fast you can watch and return movies (with the 3 out at a time limit). i’d do this, only i’m not big on trading things. believe it or not, whether i like it or not, i tend to keep things like dvds/games. the only time i give up stuff is if i have a double dip. well i did give up some games, but no reason to keep older versions/years of sports games. well almost no reason, there are some versions of a game that were great once, that now kind of suck and older games are good for that.
