labor talks
so the nfl is the latest of the sports to look at the CBA to get ready. hopefully it won’t press on like the nhl and seemingly the nba did/are doing but it’s intriguing:
The most mind-boggling notion: If no new deal is struck, every NFL player could be a free agent in 2007. With no salary cap in place

it’d be like a free-for-all. real life fantasy football, only not everyone is equal because not everyone has the same amount of money. would owners really open up and pay ridiculous amounts to get the players they want (as much as these owners love sports, they also love their money)? would players go to the money or go to the championship (team where better players are signing and take less money to go along for the ride)? would small market teams be able to compete (the lure of playing at lambeau)? this would be beyond entertaining to watch. i think owners need to clamp down anyways. the days of overspending are, and need to be over. thank god it happened in the nba already. like all those players who got them deserved max out contracts. no way in hell. but the nfl, what i don’t like most (and i’m sure it’s the same in every sport to some degree) is the auto pay bump. does this year’s number 1 overall draft pick REALLY need to make a contract bigger than last year’s number 1 overall pick? no, that kind of thinking is ludicrous and leads to rising prices for NO reason. and while i’m at it, all contracts should be for yearly equal money. you want a $100 mil contract for 10 years. $10 mil a year. too bad that’s 20% of your cap. at the end of the day, it’s not just players, but also owners who are causing this crazy inflation of cost. and it’s unstoppable until someone takes a stand. that someone will probably lose a lot in doing so, but it’ necessary.
