The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)

i am a PB blogger. though technically that’s not true because these days i do most of my blogging at work (because what do i blog on except news and posts from other blogs which only really come during the business day), so i am a PC blogger. but i do on occasion blog from my PB. way back when i was in school, i blogged, offline, from my PB with ecto. nowadays i blog when i find something interesting. and by the time i get home with some freetime, everything to be seen and commented on in that day has been done. i used to blog from my PB at work, back when i had to use my own machine at work (i miss those days) or when i brought it just to tool around (and thus had two machines up and running at once).

CNN.com - Woman jailed after calling 911 about pizza man - May 25, 2005

old people live too long. i guess that’s why they’re old. but they shouldn’t drive, etc. they should be like the old school eskimos and just have them walk out and you know, die on their own

more horse shit

ESPN.com - NFL - Competition committee bans ‘horse-collar’ tackle

A 15-yard penalty will be called only if the tackle immediately brings the ball carrier down, and only if he’s in open field.

ridiculous. so open field tackle. that traditionally means outside of the tackle box, beyond the linebackers. so if you have a receiver let’s say on the right sideline past the linebackers, covered by a corner AND a safety, does that count as open field? if on a crazy blitz, some defender gets through lightning quick ala LT in his prime and makes a tackle behind the line of scrimmage, let’s say on an end around or a reverse, is that open field and no horse-collar allowed? and no penalty unless immediately brought down? what’s immediate? even the roy williams-TO tackle, i don’t know if i’d call that immediate. i mean i guess the immediacy part goes to the reason for the rule: player injury protection. if he’s going fast one way and is immediately brought down another, that’s the likely place for an injury. but say you have a bruising fullback who somehow makes it into the open field, horse collared, but in csonka effort he just drags defenders, who have horse collared him, no penalty? what if he drags them a yard or two, then falls back severely injuring himself, is that penalty/fine worthy? regardless, like i said the other day, if you can use a guy’s HAIR to tackle him, you should be able to use his pads. either that or disallow them from taping their jerseys down or something. you have got to give a defender something if he’s trying to catch an offensive player.

where’s george costanza when you need him?

Gothamist: Need to Go Basis

george didn’t need a list. he knew, at any given location (and i can only assume manhattan only, though NEVER underestimate george costanza. he is the one who came up with the master plan for the girlfriend/roommate switch), the best bathroom in the area. for the rest of us mere mortals, fill out the form, and bam you get the list. i haven’t bothered to fill it out yet, but perhaps i will at some point today if i’m bored and not busy. hmm, bored and not busy, if i need to fulfill both of those to fill it out, no chance i’m doing that anytime soon, though i suppose i could fill it out in lieu of blogging about it.

Morse code vs. SMS on the Tonight Show - Engadget

the “read” link in the article has a video link to watch it. i didn’t see this as i was finally watching the 24 finale, which i’m not as high on as most people. in fact, my view on 24 is it’s a lot like star wars ep. 3, which i haven’t seen. but in addition to the reviews praising it generally, i’ve also seen a handful of reviews asking why it isn’t being panned for the bad things (e.g. lucas’s script and direction). these bad things are getting glossed over in fanboy love. i think the same thing happens with 24. regardless, texting vs morse, i bet texting wins. even though now two contests the morse guy won. i wonder what phone the text guy was using. t9 or itap? or the tap tap tap manual entry?

take care of your kids but i can’t figure this one out

CNN.com - P. Diddy fights record child support - May 24, 2005

diddy is currently paying $21k/month in child support. he was paying $5k. he’s challenging the increase. even if he goes on the offensive, unfortunately diddy will probably not win the PR fight. but i don’t understand. i don’t know how NY figures child support payments, but in addition to child support diddy pays for health insurance, tuition, vacations, clothes, and other items. so what the hell does the kid do/need at $21k/month? i wish i could read the pleadings to see how the mother came up with this number (well no, she actually asked for $35k/month, court “only” awarded the $21k) and the court’s reasoning for awarding as much as it did.

good for carl jr.

Carl’s Jr. not sorry for sexy Paris Hilton ad - May. 24, 2005

Carl’s Jr.’s message to the PTC: “Get a life.” “This isn’t Janet Jackson — there is no nipple in this,” said Andy Puzder, the CEO of Carl’s Jr., a subsidiary of CKE Restaurants (Research). “There is no nudity, there is no sex acts — It’s a beautiful model in a swimsuit washing a car.”

what absolute crap. this is the reactionary world we live in now. i swear it’s like advocacy groups get more and more extreme with each passing moment. i’m glad carl jr.’s is taking a stand. it’s f-in’ ridiculous.

Caldwell says that because the ad is airing during sports programs, and FOX’s “OC”, which are heavily watched by teens, it promotes sexuality to an audience that might not be ready for it.

you know what? you think this commercial is too racy or whatever? it’s playing during the OC. which, if i’m not mistaken (i don’t watch the OC), featured an attempted rape, a lesbian relationship (not that i have a problem with this, but i’d imagine it’s the kind of thing that this type of adovcacy group would have a problem with), severe alcoholism, etc. if you think the commercial is bad, hmm, maybe you shouldn’t let your kid watch the OC. your teen can’t handle a paris hilton burger commercial? how about instead of bitching about it, you just have a serious, open, frank discussion with your kids, who you are already letting watch a show with what has to be questionable material in your eyes.
