The New Face of Racing, and Perhaps More - New York Times

danica patrick. the talk of the racing world, at least in america. hey i get it that she’s a woman doing things that a woman has not done before. kudos to her. but i don’t necessarily understand all the sex appeal talk. outside of being a woman. i know it’s all subjective, but i don’t find her all that attractive. maybe it’s just me.

C.D.C. Team Investigates an Outbreak of Obesity - New York Times

seriously, i’m all for being healthy. i made big changes to my lifestyle to get more healthy (not that it’s paying any dividends because of the unhealthy parts of my life that counterbalance any gains i’ve made), but this is stupid. obesity “outbreak” quit eating high-fat, high-sugar foods, exercise. wow, what a terribly hard formula! regardless of some people’s predisposition to obesity (can’t be that many people unless there’s some sort of evolutionary change where the species as a whole is becoming more obese, but since it’s just america, maybe we can be a subspecies) or addicitive behavior, those things don’t account for the entire upswing in obesity. this is probably the thing that bothers me most about health/science news, how obesity is treated and viewed. it’s no longer the obese person’s fault EVER. wtf with that? hey i know the mcdonald’s is cheaper, faster, and in a lot of ways tastier (at least to your brain which loves the high fat high sugar foods), but don’t eat it so much. where is personal responsibility gone?

i can tell you, i don’t eat a lot of high fat high sugar foods anymore. the other day we had a big meeting at work, so they bought breakfast platters (fruit platter, pastries platter). i had some fruit and a cheese danish. i can say that the cheese danish, a regular cheese danish, was too sweet. never used to have a problem with cheese danish, but now too sweet and made me a little nauseated (ha, the correct use of the word, not nauseous, even though so much misuse that it’s acceptable now).

i don’t know, i know it’s more complex than that, but at the end of the day it’s basically calories in vs calories out. yes you want to watch fat and sugar etc, but it’s in versus out. just like the stock market. SO complex. what to buy, when, etc. but at the end of the day it’s really a matter of buy low sell high. hah.

i somehow manage to keep my friends

Open Loops: How to Lose Friends and Alienate People With Email

i do three of these things regularly.

1. i ramble like nobody’s business. my email stories have tangents and ridiculously long parentheticals to include everything. but at least it’s all tangentially related. and it’s not like it’s work email. work email is to the point. personal email is more of me having a conversation with friends i can’t actually speak with. and in the normal flow of conversation with many of my friends, we break into the tangent quite frequently.

2. the no caps, i do it. i’m doing it now. i do try to observe at least partially correct grammar and ounctuation. actually for the longest time i’ve been trying to get out of the no caps habit, it’s just something you have to do or not. in fact, i think i have a post on it from way back when i first started this blog considering whether i’d type properly with caps and all the goodness that comes with it, or just maintain my current non-caps typing. i guess it’s blatantly obvious which won out, but i still consider typing properly.

3. i DEFINITELY (and i don’t use bold or italics, though i can, to emphasize something, since i’m no caps i just all caps, damnit, another tangent) use the off-beat humor/sarcasm in the email. and blog post for that matter. but i don’t send it to anyone who wouldn’t get it. and i know that’s what everyone thinks, but again, business/work versus personal email is different for me. just like i can talk ghetto or whatever with the best of them, but can talk properly when called upon to do so. but i have nothing if not sarcastic friends, so they get it.

beyond that, i really do try to maintain good email etiquette

some people have all the luck

HoustonChronicle.com - Museums use pop-culture magnets to draw audiences

“So much of what is in that movie is there because of the science of optics, of perspective, of green screening,” she said. The exhibit uses extensive audio visual programs to explain how the movie’s magic was created.

look i’m all for touring this kind of exhibit for the fans, but serious, museum of NATURAL HISTORY. not movies, not moving image, not even fine arts. NATURAL HISTORY. i think it’s crap they try to make it “fit” into the mission of the museum of natural history. call it what it is, a way to boost attendance/revenues. apparently there’s also some kind of baseball exhibit at the MFA here, and people are complaining about that, but i’ll withhold judgment because i don’t know anything about it yet.
