Denzel, Oprah, Bowie, Sting Among AARP The Magazine’s Hot Fifty

first off, in hollywood and in the age of celebrity, age isn’t as big a deal as it used to be. but there’s just something a little creepy about the AARP putting out a “hot” fifty list. though i suppose their interpretation of “hot” isn’t the same as, say, Us Weekly. i do think the category headings are fun.

The Original Dog Powered Scooter

oh yeah, to make my title make sense, i have a mini schnauzer named monty. he’s 11.7 lbs. i don’t think he could pull me, hell i don’t think he could pull the scooter if it were empty. but i don’t know, i have 10 lbs ankle weights, maybe i’ll strap them to him to see if he can even pull 20lbs extra.

in defense of a preposterous list

TIME.com — Richard Corliss: That Old Feeling: Secrets of the All-Time 100

an explanation of sorts for that ridiculous top 100 movies of all time list from a week or two back. it’s ridiculous. right after the list came out they tried to say lists are made to create debate, it’s not an authoritative list, etc etc etc. well if time had called it “top 100 movies we like best” or something it wouldn’t be a big deal. but in the age of hyperbole and sound bites, top 100 movies of all time is a bit catchier.

it’s nice to keep the business in the family

CNN.com - Police say granny, 80, ran prostitution ring - Jun 6, 2005

um, she took over the business from her daughter who died. umm, okay. though i suppose if you are old, it’s better than waiting for some paltry social security check.

get out the vote

HoustonChronicle.com - Abortion consent measure now law

it’s actually not law as it’s an amendment to the tx constitution and has to be voted on. in this state i’m sure it’ll pass, but i hope not. get to the polls. so ridiculous.

you’ve got to be kidding me

HoustonChronicle.com - ‘Missing’ A&M student found 7 years later

For the past five years, Ann Dickenson and her daughter Tammy have released balloons on Stahr’s birthday — one for each year of her life, said Ken Dickenson.

so i’m glad they decide to send up rubber balloons that will pop and litter the earth and/or kill birds to celebrate their daughter who ran away.

And all of those years, she has been working at a Sam’s Club in Florence, Ky. She is a department manager, has invested in a 401(k) retirement plan and owns stock options. She never changed her name and continued to use the same Social Security number.

okay, USING THE SAME F-IN’ NAME AND SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER??!?!?!? how the hell does it take seven years to find her? there’s no way to do a basic national search for a name? i’m obviously not a law enforcement official or a private investigator, but i’d imagine if i was looking for someone and that person was using the same name it wouldn’t be the MOST difficult thing to do. fuck, just do a zaba search or whatever.
