‘You’ve got to find what you love,’ Jobs says
this is a transcript of steve jobs’s (btw, this is a COMPLETE tangent, which is a big no no in the blog/post rules, but i can’t stand the convention of a simple apostrophe for a possessive noun that ends in “s”) commencement speech at standford from this year. “find what you love” - yeah, great advice there steve-o. like we don’t already know that. the hard part is finding out what you love and finding a way to have that make a living for you. his suggestion:
I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
umm, yeah.
btw, don’t you LOVE the grandiosity that is jobs? he is single handedly claiming responsibility for FONTS! yes, ladies and gentlemen you can thank your lucky stars that steve jobs took a calligraphy class so we could all enjoy fonts. because regardless of the concept that fonts existed in the printed media and undoubtedly would’ve been incorporated into the electronic media, it’s all because stevie took a class:
If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, its likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.
all that being said, good for jobs. it was a great speech. and i didn’t even see/hear it. just the transcript. i’m a fan of oratory. i’m not super knowledgeable on it, i haven’t studied speech writing, but i enjoy it. and while a lot of it has to do with delivery, you can read a good script and know it’s a good speech regardless of delivery (or at least you can tell about the potential to be a good speech).
