tangy goodness

Filed under: electronics, music, technology - Just Me @ 8:00 am

So I installed tangerine and it totally kicks! I’ve started to tell everyone about it. My friend just picked up running with his new Nike+ kit (we’re currently in a tight race using the Nike+ challenge!) and I told him about it and he is all about it. As am I. All my tangerine based playlists are named “Tangy X.” I’ve only made a few, and it’s dope that they have built in profiles for different kinds of playlists (BPM rising and falling, “hills,” etc.). Though if you want to talk about party/jam mix cds, according to Barney of “How I Met Your Mother,” it should be “always rising!”

Go get tangerine, from the potion factory!

dream come true?

Filed under: electronics, music, technology - Just Me @ 4:31 pm

I’m at work so I can’t download and try this little app. But I’ve high hopes that it is what I’ve been looking for for so long. (”For for?” Can that be right?) These days I have so much new music that I set my nano to shuffle by album so I can listen to it all, but normally I shuffle all, which means I am skipping songs left and right. I hope this works as well as I want it to. Follow-up to follow once I install and try it out.

tangerine, the beat counting app!

nickname

Filed under: technology, social - Just Me @ 8:48 am

who gives nicknames?

an nytimes article about nicknames. a few things: (1) i don’t think i’ve EVER met anyone (not that i travel in the most digital of circles) that has had a nicknamed based on their IM or email handle.
(2) i don’t care if ppl are starting to use their IM or email handle as their nicknames, giving yourself a nickname is just utter crap.

CNN.com - ‘Literary’ texts no more? - Nov 17, 2005

putting literary texts in “txt” languages for study aids? no. ridiculous, like we should really cater to the continuing idiocy of the youth. though i say that as i type with no capitalization. (=

A terabyte iPod - and other Apple predictions - Nov. 11, 2005

i’d NEVER be able to fill it. a terabyte? truthfully, unless it had hd dvr capabilities, i’d rather have other things than ungodly amounts of storage (or i could move to all AL formatted music).

A Dizzying Array of Options for Using the Web on Cellphones - New York Times

not a particularly interesting article, but posting it anyways because it quoted peter rojas, editor of my favorite blog (and dream job, well i’d like to think my dream job, but who knows how much money they make over there in the WIN network) ENGADGET. if you have any interest in tech/electronics news, that’s the place to go.

CNN.com - Russia: Solar sail launch fails - Jun 22, 2005

actually i have nothing against russia. but it’s just funny to think of this in communist, cold war russia terms. sure the solar sail “failed” and is “lost.” meanwhile their super secret spy agency is currently using it to do something nefarious. hahaha.

CNN.com - Solar spacecraft set to blast off - Jun 21, 2005

suppose this idea does work. suppose photons beaming out of the sun hit the sails and propels this thing. they are talking about it reaching super far places. granted once it’s going it’s going. but at some point don’t photons from other stars start to hit it and move it in different or even opposite directions? i mean just as a matter of common sense? or is our sun the ONLY star that emits protons?

btw, what is the proper name for the star that is the sun? other stars have actual names, with capitalized first letters and everything. but the most important star to us, the sun, is just the sun. not the Sun.

ipod and social isolation or just personal barrier

Personal Tech Pipeline | iPod Users Hate Cell Phones - Survey

Bull found IPod owners love the ability to live and work uninterrupted with a personalized soundtrack for their ears only.

“It’s not that they don’t want to know about things, but they want to define the terms and conditions” under which they are disturbed, said Bull

“A world where everyone has their headphones on may not be a very pleasant world,” he said, considering the potential ramifications of IPod culture.

“What happens to the person I’m sitting next to on the bus? Or the person I buy groceries from? Or one’s own family?”

Bull says the desire to use technology to withdraw from the constant barrage of noise and interruption indicates, to some extent, the death of “public space.” But don’t blame IPods.

“In some cases these technologies are an antidote,” he said. “Your IPod user, as they walk down the street in their own sound world, doesn’t have to be disturbed by mobile phone users or anyone else.”

when i’m out of the house, i have my ipod with me and on about 95% of the time. does it isolate me from others? yes, but only to the degree i want. hell, sometimes it doesn’t help. i don’t know if it’s everyone in this ipod world, but people feel more than comfortable talking to me while i have my headphones in my ears! so of course i have to pop one out and ask them to repeat the whole thing. it’s a matter of being not alone, but like away from all the other crap that is going on. plus, it’s a nice way to kind of have running soundtrack during your life. it’s a weird thing. it used to be a specific song would take you back to a certain time, but now with the ipod and other DAPs it’s a whole new ballgame.

oh and fwiw, i’m an ipod user/lover but i LOVE cell phones too (well any consumer electronic really)

The Original Dog Powered Scooter

oh yeah, to make my title make sense, i have a mini schnauzer named monty. he’s 11.7 lbs. i don’t think he could pull me, hell i don’t think he could pull the scooter if it were empty. but i don’t know, i have 10 lbs ankle weights, maybe i’ll strap them to him to see if he can even pull 20lbs extra.

i somehow manage to keep my friends

Open Loops: How to Lose Friends and Alienate People With Email

i do three of these things regularly.

1. i ramble like nobody’s business. my email stories have tangents and ridiculously long parentheticals to include everything. but at least it’s all tangentially related. and it’s not like it’s work email. work email is to the point. personal email is more of me having a conversation with friends i can’t actually speak with. and in the normal flow of conversation with many of my friends, we break into the tangent quite frequently.

2. the no caps, i do it. i’m doing it now. i do try to observe at least partially correct grammar and ounctuation. actually for the longest time i’ve been trying to get out of the no caps habit, it’s just something you have to do or not. in fact, i think i have a post on it from way back when i first started this blog considering whether i’d type properly with caps and all the goodness that comes with it, or just maintain my current non-caps typing. i guess it’s blatantly obvious which won out, but i still consider typing properly.

3. i DEFINITELY (and i don’t use bold or italics, though i can, to emphasize something, since i’m no caps i just all caps, damnit, another tangent) use the off-beat humor/sarcasm in the email. and blog post for that matter. but i don’t send it to anyone who wouldn’t get it. and i know that’s what everyone thinks, but again, business/work versus personal email is different for me. just like i can talk ghetto or whatever with the best of them, but can talk properly when called upon to do so. but i have nothing if not sarcastic friends, so they get it.

beyond that, i really do try to maintain good email etiquette
